UK energy trends

Changing energy sources

Energy is one of our most essential needs, after food and water. We consume it without thinking much about where it’s coming from and we only really notice its absence when there is a power cut. Where do we get our energy from, and how are the sources of energy changing?

Go to the website www.evoenergy.co.uk/uk-energy-guide and look at the changing trends in the UK’s energy consumption over the last few decades. Not only has our total energy demand changed, but the sources we rely upon to provide that energy have shifted over time. As some resources are exhausted, others have been discovered. Prices rise or costs fall. These factors, along with changing political priorities and public opinion, cause our energy mix to alter. Click the <View the data> box or scroll down to the energy ‘tree’ showing the UK’s primary energy mix over a 40-year period.

For a selected decade, click on the energy components in the key on the right to see the percentage contribution of each to the UK’s total energy needs. To track the trend of each energy source, click the <All> button beneath the key to show ‘on’, and scroll through the decades from 1970 to 2010, noticing how each source changes over time.
