Urban traffic management

Fieldwork data on traffic flows are easy to collect and can be analysed in a variety of ways

As car ownership has increased, many towns and cities have struggled to cope. The impact is greatest in town/ city centres, many of which were not designed to cope with present-day volumes of traffic. The sheer volume of traffic creates problems such as congestion, slow speed of travel, accidents and noise pollution. Local authorities have used a range of trafficmanagement strategies in response to these issues. A variety of issues can be explored in a fieldwork project and suitable data are readily available.

Select between seven and ten survey sites in a town, or part of a city. The sites should be within manageable travelling distance of each other, but far enough apart for there to be likely variations in results. Choosing some locations in a traffic-management zone will help to ensure this and will also provide useful data on the effectiveness of the measures. Data could be collected on some or all of the following variables.
