Urban issues in Mexico City

This case study considers the major issues facing a rapidly expanding mega-city, with a focus on water supply

Mexico City proper has a population of about 9 million people. The population of the whole urban area, Greater Mexico City, is nearer 21 million, making it one of the world’s largest cities (see Figure 1). This population creates a huge demand for fresh water and in turn produces a vast amount of ‘black water’ (raw sewage). This is not surprising, but the fact that Mexico City lies in a basin surrounded by mountains at over 7,000 ft (2,300 m) complicates the situation.
