Tropical storms are intensifying

Climate hazards are rarely out of the news as global temperatures rise and atmospheric systems respond to an increased input of energy. Tropical storms are one of the most devastating climate hazards. This column looks at the conditions that lead to their development, the parts of the world they affect and their impact.

Visit the website of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its student zone: https://scijinks.gov and click the ‘Games’ tab. From the options that are presented select ‘How Does a Hurricane Form?’ Watch the introductory video clip and then read the information below about hurricanes: the various terms they go by in different parts of the world, the stages in their development from ‘Tropical disturbance’ to ‘Hurricane,’ and the poster summary at the bottom.

Once you have a clear understanding of hurricane formation, go back to the ‘Games’ tab in the menu and look for the ‘Hurricane simulation’ option. Open this and follow the instructions alongside, adjusting the location of the high pressure (H) anticyclone, the emergent tropical storm low pressure (L) and changing the season by clicking on it.
