Entering the legal profession

Paula Blakemore looks at the problem of social mobility in relation to legal careers, and asks if A-level law can improve access

Growing up on a council estate in Merseyside in the 1970s, I did not know what a lawyer was or what they did. I studied history at university because I didn’t know what else to do. Only later did I complete the law conversion course and the Law Society finals (as they were then) and become a solicitor. I spent over 20 years in an interesting and lucrative profession before switching to teaching.

I was the only child from my council estate who entered the law. But is it any easier to access the legal profession today?
