The sheer diversity of options for chemistry graduates may surprise you. A chemistry degree offers you flexibility in terms of future employment, i.e. it allows you to keep your options open. For example, you may decide to use your degree to go into a career directly related to chemistry, such as becoming a research chemist or a teacher. Alternatively, you may decide to enter occupations that are not chemistry-specific, such as finance, management, information technology (IT) or marketing (see pp. 16–17).
The reason for this flexibility is that a chemistry degree provides not only detailed subject-specific knowledge, but also employability skills, also known as transferable skills. In a highly competitive job market, it is important to show potential employers that you have developed both skills and experience (Figure 1).
