Edgelands

Edgelands (Inset 1) are a particular type of landscape, which often appears unplanned and is largely uncelebrated. When we think of different land uses we are comfortable with the idea of towns, villages, coasts and countryside. However, we are less able to define the geographical identity of the boundary between the built environment and countryside. These edgeland landscapes are often disregarded.

This Practical Geography examines some of the characteristics and identities of edgelands and develops some fieldwork ideas that can be used to explore such environments.
