The War Powers Act revisited

In early September 2014 President Obama announced that the USA was taking military action, including the use of air strikes, against ISIS/the Islamic State in both Iraq and Syria.

Since the passage of the 1973 War Powers Act, presidents are required to seek Congressional assent within 60 days of beginning ‘hostilities’. In the absence of such assent, US forces must be withdrawn within 30 days (Ackerman, 2014).
