Understanding the command word ‘justify’

‘Justify’ is a common command word in GCSE exams. To help you understand what examiners are looking for, this ‘Improve Your Grade’ looks at different types of questions which use ‘justify,’ and what each type requires in your answer.

To ‘justify’ means to explain the reasons why you have chosen something. It tends to occur either in questions about fieldwork or as part of a decision-making exercise (DME). For example, in AQA GCSE Paper 3 or Edexcel B GCSE Paper 3, or a problem-solving paper, such as Eduqas GCSE B Paper 2.
