Interrogating 2021 census data for England and Wales

There has been a national census taken in England and Wales every 10 years since 1841, apart from 1941. It takes time before the results are processed and made available and the findings of the 2021 census are being released in batches. This article shows how you can examine the data.

Visit the website of the Office for National Statistics: http://census.gov.uk/census-2021-results and click on the section heading ‘Census 2021 interactive content’. From the list of contents, select ‘Census maps’. Scroll down the page that opens and in the blue shading click ‘Use our interactive map’, which opens in a new tab.

On the left there are various topic categories of census data. Select ‘Population’ and from the list of options that are revealed click ‘Age’. The choropleth map of England and Wales that is revealed shows Local Authority Districts (LADs) and their percentage of population under the age of 15 (children). Hovering your pointer over the map reveals the specific percentage for each LAD. Change the age category on the left to ‘Aged 65 years and over’ and notice the map pattern change.
